More than Noise: Minseo Jang’s high school band shattering expectations
Minseo Jang is a high school bassist who created his own band due to a musical revelation. After years in his church’s praise team, he decided he wanted to showcase his bass skills in a larger community. With encouragement from his mom, Minseo reached out to his friends and created his own band.
To Minseo, music is more than just a hobby; it is a way for him to relax, soothe himself, and create new connections. The turning point of his band came when he became the leader of his band and realised that “all of us needed improvement”. After this realization, the band decided to practice more frequently and take music more seriously.
Currently, Minseo states that balancing school life and band is manageable as the members meet every two weeks on Saturday, making it a low commitment. Their band enjoys playing songs inspired by Day6 and Wave to Earth. In their joyous journey, a major hurdle appeared when one of their singers, Benjamin Kim, suddenly left. To Minseo, he stated he felt "disappointed, but we are still determined to keep this Band alive.” As of this moment, they do not have a band name yet, but are still practicing diligently.
Through this experience, Minseo found his passion for “music and the expression of music.” Moreover, he found out that as the Band leader, he had to be more responsible and a good example as a leader.” The group plans to practice diligently and intends to perform on the streets in the future. Minseo believes that through the band, they are shattering stereotypes and want people to remember that “Koreans do know how to play Music.”
